The Minister for Home and Cultural Affairs in a statement to the Parliament said that the government has no plans to open a slaughterhouse in Bhutan. The Minister for Agriculture and Forests Lyonpo Yeshey Dorji said that the new Serbithang plant is not for a slaughterhouse but to import raw meat and process it in a clean and hygenic way since the meat available now was not processed well. He said that a lot of the funds will be used for dairy self sufficency across the country. Giving an example he said that in Bumthang the dairy cows will be increased from 21 to 150 and the goal is to take it to 1000 cows for milk production. The agriculture minister that an existing piggery would be located from Serbithang to Yusipang since it is a better location.
He said that in Wamrong, Trashigang, they want to put additional cows for milk production.
The Prime Minister Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay also said that that the government does not have any plans to build slaughterhouses. He said that all the talk of a government slaughterhouses is false. The PM stated that the government would never do such things.
